Most people don’t think twice about a small lump or bump under the skin until it starts to grow, become uncomfortable, or interfere with daily life. Two of the most common causes of these skin lumps are cysts and lipomas. Though they are typically benign, they can be concerning, especially when they appear in visible areas or begin to change.

At Dermatology West, we regularly evaluate and manage these kinds of skin concerns. Understanding what cysts and lipomas are and when to seek care can help you feel more confident in addressing them.

What Is a Cyst?

A cyst is a closed sac that forms under the skin, usually filled with a thick, sometimes oily substance. These are often referred to as “sebaceous” or “epidermoid” cysts, though the terminology can vary. Cysts are typically round, smooth, and moveable under the skin, and they may have a small central opening on the surface.

While many cysts remain small and harmless, they can sometimes become red, swollen, or tender. In certain cases, a cyst can rupture beneath the skin or become infected, which leads to increased discomfort and inflammation.

Cysts may form anywhere on the body but are especially common on the scalp, face, back, neck, or chest. They can be triggered by blocked hair follicles, minor trauma to the skin, or simply develop without a clear cause.

What Is a Lipoma?

A lipoma is a benign growth made up of fatty tissue. These soft, rubbery lumps are usually slow-growing and found just beneath the skin. Lipomas are most often located on the shoulders, back, arms, thighs, or neck, and they tend to move slightly when pressed.

Lipomas are not harmful, and in many cases, they don’t cause any symptoms at all. However, some individuals may notice a lipoma becoming more noticeable over time, especially if it grows larger or forms near a nerve or joint. When this happens, it can lead to discomfort or cosmetic concerns.

How Are They Different?

Although both cysts and lipomas appear as lumps under the skin, they differ in several important ways:

  • Texture: Cysts are often firmer and may have a central pore. Lipomas tend to feel softer and more doughy.
  • Location and Depth: Cysts typically sit closer to the surface, while lipomas are found a bit deeper.
  • Contents: Cysts contain fluid or keratin, while lipomas are made of fatty tissue.
  • Growth Pattern: Lipomas generally grow more slowly and are less likely to become inflamed than cysts.

In either case, an accurate diagnosis from a dermatology provider is key.

When to Seek Evaluation

Many cysts and lipomas do not require immediate treatment. However, there are some signs that indicate it may be time to have a dermatology provider take a closer look:

  • The lump is growing in size
  • It’s becoming painful, red, or inflamed
  • There is drainage or a foul smell
  • It’s located in an area where it rubs against clothing or causes discomfort
  • You’re unsure what the lump is and want peace of mind

Even if the bump is small and not causing symptoms, some patients choose to have it looked at for cosmetic reasons or to prevent possible future irritation.

What You Can Expect During a Visit

At Dermatology West, we begin with a careful physical examination and discussion of your symptoms. Depending on the appearance and location of the lump, a diagnosis can often be made visually. In some cases, further evaluation such as imaging or biopsy may be recommended to confirm the diagnosis or rule out other possibilities.

Treatment, if needed, will depend on the size, location, and nature of the cyst or lipoma. Some growths can be safely monitored over time, while others may be best addressed with minor in-office procedures.

Patients are often relieved to learn that most cysts and lipomas are benign and do not require urgent care. Still, we understand that even harmless skin changes can be worrisome, especially when they affect your comfort or confidence.
