Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis, or often referred to as seb dermatitis or seb derm, is a chronic inflammatory condition typically confined to the scalp, ears and face, though it can spread to the neck and trunk as well. This inflammation causes redness, itching and visible scale (dandruff).

Seborrheic dermatitis can sometimes be treated effectively with over the counter shampoos and creams, but often requires the prescription of a topical antifungal, steroidal or nonsteroidal shampoo, cream or lotion for effective improvement.

that seborrheic dermatitis is thought to be caused by the proliferation of a natural yeast (Malassezia sp.), the byproducts of which cause the inflammation and symptoms. This is not the same as a yeast infection, however, because the yeast is present on normal skin even in people without seborrheic dermatitis, and eradication of the yeast does not always improve the condition.

Is seb dermatitis the same as dandruff?

Seb dermatitis is thought to exist on a spectrum, with simple dandruff (scalp flakes) occupying the mild end. Several of the same treatments that improve dandruff, including over the counter anti-yeast, coal tar and salicylic acid shampoos, also tend to improve seborrheic dermatitis.

Can children have seborrheic dermatitis?

Interestingly, seborrheic dermatitis is very common in babies, and is termed “cradle cap”. This typically improves with time, but a visit to the dermatology office may still be helpful to direct effective treatment of cradle cap.

How is seborrheic dermatitis different from eczema?

Seborrheic dermatitis is sometimes difficult to distinguish from eczema, but typically exhibits a more yellowish scale, due the skin oil that is built up in the flakes. The two conditions have very similar symptoms, however, including redness and itchiness, and at times may affect the same skin areas.
